Three days in Istanbul: Basic Molecular Pathology Course with “Hands On” Interactive Practice

This is a very intensive course aimed at residents, fellows, practicing pathologists and oncologists. Its goal is to provide an in-depth review and update on basic molecular pathology concepts in a strong relation with crucial needs and rational needed in clinical practice.

Participants will not only be aware of basic knowledge and concepts of molecular pathology, but also will realize crucial reason-ration relations strongly needed in practice for decision making strategies required for diagnosis, prognosis, therapy as well as pathogenesis of human diseases.

The program features didactic lectures on meticulously selected topics and interactive QA's with faculties. A multidimensional real-time best practice round table discussion session will also sense our attendees to realize the importance and performance kept in QA/QC concepts in molecular pathology both in theory and practice. In the end of first two days, limited number of volunteer participants will have a chance for hands on practice of important initial steps of molecular pathology lab applications upon their request with first come-first serve base.

Each participant will receive a flash drive containing all didactic lectures and interactive sessions performed in the format of synchronized voice over ppt.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

- Realize the rationale of molecular pathology application,

- Crucial steps in the way of molecular pathology laboratory set up: From chaos to molecular pathology lab,

- To understand the principles of technology used in molecular pathology labs,

- Understand the reason of QA/QC program and the way of lab accreditation,

- Understand the crucial impact of lab math on test results,

- Understand how to overcome the sensitivity problem especially for very small amount of diagnostic samples and realize the rational of microdissection,

- Use nucleic acids and protein extraction methods from various diagnostic materials sea the limitations, advantages and the impact of this process on both test procedures and results,

- Stepwise analytic necessities following nucleic acid extraction for further applications,

- To realize the power and limitations of nucleic acid amplification techniques,

- To understand the analytic perspectives of electrophoresis, nucleic acid restrictions and their clinical perspectives with impacts of each step on test results,

- To learn the basic concept behind the fluorescent imaging, fine tuning in the methods, limitations and advantages of probe selection logic for a precise set up needed in pathology applications,

- To cover the basic mutation concept, learn strategies in mutation detection in parallel to evolving technologies with their limitations and advantages,

- To remind the importance of material triage for molecular pathology procedures and its possible impact on test results,

- To set up a basic PCR reaction, to realize the importance of optimization

- To learn how to evaluate a PCR amplification reaction quality and to evaluate the electrophoretic gel results with its logical depth in practice.

- Learn how to store and retrieve extracted nucleic acid and with limitations.
